Unfortunately, the environment is the receiving end of the negative effect of a flourishing tourism industry.

Good post. I just returned from there. I was surprise to see so much western development in Kuta and the traffic with poor street light is just dangerous. Kuta was like a big happy hour Miami style strip with mostly people from Australia and some Europeans. To be honest, I did not like it (nothing against the Aussies) but the entire idea to go to an island in Indonesia is to be in their culture while be in the beach. I read so much about Bali and we wanted to see the nicest beaches and Balinese hospitality. We ended up staying in Nusa Dua away from Kuta. We probably reconsider for future visits to stay in Ubud or another place in the map of Denpasar.
For sure, investment and development is part of all countries, but at the same time they should be an organized and discipline content to follow. All around the world islands spots are getting exploded without control. Not only the goverment is responsible but the investors and people who abuse of the lack of controls.
